Today, the world’s longest tunnel is expected to break through a 35.4 mile cavity through the Swiss Alps, providing an alternate freight corridor between Switzerland and Italy, while taking more freight from diesel-thirsty trucks and enabling these products to travel on high speed rail lines. When the $10 billion first phase of this ambitious project is completed in 2017, it will have taken nearly 20 years to complete and cost Swiss taxpayers $1,300 per person.
