KAI Opens Office in Tallahassee, Florida
February 18, 2014
Kittelson & Associates, Inc. (KAI) is pleased to announce the opening of our newest office in Tallahassee, Florida. The office will be led by Li Jin, PhD, AICP, with support from senior staff including John (Jack) Freeman, PE and Karl Passetti, PE. Located in the heart of downtown Tallahassee, this new office is within close proximity to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Central Office, Florida Capitol and Legislative Offices, Florida State University, Florida A&M University, and Doak Campbell Stadium.
The opportunity to open the Tallahassee office arose when Mr. Jin’s wife was hired as an associate professor in the engineering department at Florida State University. To develop his personal interest and leverage his exceptional traffic modeling and data analysis skills, KAI exercised the policy of following our people and decided the timing was right to open an office. The Tallahassee office gives us coverage in northern Florida and supplements our existing offices in the southern and central parts of the state.
“KAI has been considering opening a Tallahassee office for as much as two years as we continue to do more and more to serve FDOT Central Office with different types of projects from planning to safety to traffic operations to transit,” says Mr. Freeman. “This opportunity already allows us to provide more responsive service to important clients like the FDOT Central Office and FDOT District 3.”
KAI has had a presence in the Florida market since John Zegeer, PE, PTOE opened our Fort Lauderdale office in 1996, closely followed by Mr. Freeman opening the Orlando office in 1998. Almost since the beginning, KAI has been serving clients in the Tallahassee area. Our staff has developed strong relationships, particularly with the FDOT Systems Planning, Statistics, Transit, Safety, Traffic Operations, and Design offices. We look forward to continuing our work with the FDOT Central Office, as well as identifying ways to better serve all of our clients in northern Florida.
“Several KAI staff members are already known in this area—Karl Passetti, Jack Freeman, John Zegeer, Paul Ryus, Jessica Josselyn, Thuha Lyew, and Kelly Blume” says Mr. Jin. “Now we will be able to bring more of KAI’s national experts from other regions straight to Tallahassee, allowing us to pursue more opportunities.”
KAI’s current work in the area includes several contracts with FDOT Central Office. Our staff is currently working with the Statistics office to develop performance measures that are compliant with the Federal Highway Administration’s MAP-21 legislation. We have developed and conducted training in the new Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and access management. We developed the initial Mid-Block Pedestrian Crossing section of the FDOT Traffic Engineering Manual, are currently rewriting the Manual of Uniform Transportation Studies (MUTS), and are preparing new Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) guidelines incorporating new MAP-21 requirements. As KAI continues to build clients and contacts in the area, we hope to add more full-time staff to the office.
“We’re here for the long term, and we want to build an office. I want this to be the beginning,” says Mr. Passetti.
